Project Description:
The partner organisations in the project share the common observation that members of Roma ethnic groups have difficulties in understanding healthy lifestyles or in understanding the health system in general, or that their knowledge in the field of health is very weak. We observe that health care and healthy lifestyle promotions are rarely carried out in Roma settlements, but when they are carried out, they are carried out by doctors or nurses who use a professional language or a language that is too difficult or too professional for Roma adults. Similarly, all information materials distributed by health personnel in Roma settlements are written in a professional language that is not understood by members of the Roma community. Often, Roma also have a dislike of health personnel due to previous negative experiences, which makes it difficult for them to work with members of the Roma community. We see a solution to this problem in trained Roma lay educators who would empower Roma in the area of health literacy and healthy lifestyles.
